For six long years, Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre has been under construction as workers corrected acoustic faux pas and repaired structural damage that had left the building reportedly 75 percent unstable.
On Friday, October 28, 2011, this stunning theater will reopen with a gala event whose star power rivals the brilliance of its lavish chandeliers. Taking the stage will be operatic luminaries Placido Domingo, Natalie Dessay and Dmitri Hvorostovsky, as well as all the principal dancers and soloists of the Bolshoi Ballet including Svetlana Zakharova, Natalia Osipova and Ivan Vassiliev.
Performances from Russian operas and ballets will include Tchaikovsky’s rarely heard Iolanta, the famous “Polovetsian Dances” scene from Prince Igor, the garland waltz from The Sleeping Beauty and the “Basque Dance” from The Flames of Paris.
There will be live telecasts at scores of theaters across the country. Click the link below and type in your zip code to find the closest theater to you. Please note that some theaters will replay the gala and will also broadcast upcoming performances from the Bolshoi including The Nutcracker and Le Corsaire.
